Peace River South MLA Mike Bernier has tested positive for COVID-19.
The BC Liberal MLA started feeling symptoms earlier this week, soon after receiving the first dose of a vaccine. He is the first BC legislator to publicly report who has tested positive for COVID-19.
His wife has also contracted the virus. They are currently isolated at their home in Dawson Creek.

“We are all currently self-segregated and currently everyone is doing well. “It became a shock to all of us because we are all following public health guidelines, such as avoiding physical disturbances, wearing masks, and indoor gatherings,” Bernier wrote on his Facebook page.

“As many of you may have seen on social media, I was vaccinated on April 26. The BC Center for Disease Control told me that I was diagnosed before I was vaccinated and when I was in the Legislature in April. I was not contagious when I was in. 19-22. “
In mid-April the province announced that Dawson Creek had the highest per capita COVID-19 rate in the province and gave vaccine priority to the community. The city had an infection rate of 552 per 100,000 people.
Bernier serves as the BC Liberal finance critic. Bernier served as BC Education Minister from 2015 to 2017.
Bernier says he will spend time with the family as he works towards recovering from the virus.
“I want to encourage everyone to get vaccinated as soon as possible. I caught the virus following all protocols. The vaccine – any of the available vaccines – provides an additional layer of protection. It helps to bring all of us back to a normal life well, ”said Bernier.
