The government said on Tuesday that at least 24 people were killed and dozens were injured for those responsible for collapsing an overpass in Mexico City.
President Andrés Manuel López Obredor said officials involved in the construction and maintenance of the elevated metro line that had collapsed on Monday night said the investigation should take place quickly and should not hide anything from the public.

The overpass that collapsed was part of Linea 12, plus the network ended less than a decade ago and was plagued by protracted corruption and structural weakness allegations.
In 2014, exactly two years after its opening, many of the line’s stations were closed for structural repairs.
Four people living in the area told Reuters that they inspect the support structures under the high tracks when the train is crossed. Some recalled that the moist soil was unfit for major construction.
Following the 2017 powerful earthquake, the line’s support column also suffered damage, government data show.
“Every time I saw the train, I saw columns and beams shaking,” said Victor Lara, a daily commuter on the line. “They are not well made.”

Officials said the investigation would be conducted by DNV GL of Norway, the federal attorney general’s office, its Mexico City counterpart, and an external auditor.
US Vice President Kamala Harris and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau expressed condolences to the families and friends of the victims of the accident and Lopez Obrador announced a three-day national mourning.
López Obredor was the city’s mayor in the early 2000s, and current Mayor Claudia Shinbaum and Foreign Minister Marcello Eberrard, who fled the city when Linia 12 was built, are both senior members of their political movement.
Linea 12 was formed by CARSO Infraestructura y Construccion, a consortium of SAB de CV (CCICSA), a company controlled by the family of Mexican tycoon Carlos Slim, Mexican entity of Grupo ICA of Mexico and Alstom SA of France.
The ICA shared a chart with Reuters, indicating that CCICSA was responsible for building on the section of the line that collapsed but declined to comment further.

A CCICSA spokesman did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the chart, but said in an earlier Reuters statement that the company stood in solidarity with the victims’ families and the injured. “We’re going to wait for the official expert’s opinion,” CCICSA said.
Alstom said that its participation in the consortium was limited to certain aspects, including testing the power supply and some electromagnetic functions. The company said it would help the authorities “in any way necessary” the investigation.
Shinbaum said it appeared that a girder had given way over the overpass, which he said was inspected last year. Later at a news conference, she said the collapse indicates a “structural failure”.
“It’s not possible to say clearly, but that seems to be what happened,” Shinbaum said.
Ebrard said it was the “most horrific” accident to hit the local transportation system, and he was prepared to cooperate with authorities in the investigation.
Both urged the public to allow investigators to do their work before taking responsibility for the appeal.
